University of Southern Maine, Bailey Hall Science Laboratory Renovations
Gorham, Maine
Flexibility to accommodate a range of science disciplines required a design that could be easily altered, but provided necessary utilities and safe research areas in a collaborative learning environment. To achieve this, the laboratory renovation consisted of fixed perimeter stations and fume hoods to support individual or group experimentation.
Curricular diversity – including geoscience, earth science, chemistry and physics – required an adaptable layout. This was achieved by using movable modular bench tops capable of creating an extended perimeter, grouping as a center island, or acting as individual tables.
The project placed an emphasis on extending the laboratory environment into the adjacent corridor. Glass through-wall displays, wood-framed interior windows and display walls provide visual interest, educational opportunity and an engaging center of activity. The interior materials were chosen to support a high-tech look while being durable, functional and easy to maintain. These included sheet vinyl flooring, steel laboratory casework, stainless steel fixtures and high-pressure laminate panels.
Technology enhancements include the ability to project video from multiple sources including fume hood cameras, lab benches and an instructor’s demonstration station.
