The historic Charles E. Moody School building was evaluated as a potential home for the newly chartered Maine Academy of Natural Sciences (MeANS). MeANS provides students with hands-on, experiential learning in a natural science and agricultural-based curriculum that honors Maine’s traditions and economy. The school explored new construction and renovation options and decided that renewing this historic asset was superior to building a new facility. In doing so, school leaders were mindful of the challenges the building presented in meeting sustainability goals.
The resulting design celebrates the historic building and incorporates sustainable elements that will benefit the campus and its students for years to come. The green strategies include reuse of the building, upgrades to its exterior envelope, a building thermal envelope that exceeds code-required efficiency, incorporation of highly efficient mechanical systems, and LED lighting.
Students, school committee members, and local community representatives participated in the design. “Our students are now in the unique position of learning about natural sciences and renewable energy while sitting in classrooms powered by the sun,” said interim president Rob Moody.
