F. Marie Hall, the donor, wanted a center dedicated to the academic and personal needs of medical students. Therefore, the space includes departments for the registrar, admissions, financial aid and Student Senate. The donor also desired a space that would address the students’ need for leisure and other recreational activities.
To accomplish this, the designer created a space where students could focus on themselves and feel like they had left their classes behind. To respond to the students’ personal needs, the design concept included a game room, TV lounge, exercise center and cafe, as well as restrooms and showers. The student center also incorporates Internet connections and Internet cafes at several locations. In order to keep this space from feeling cold and sterile, the design focused on a warm-toned vibrant color scheme that included red, olive, gold and purple to accentuate the contemporary architecture. The design also used innovative products to achieve the student center`s unique feel.
