The Medical Science Building 1 (MSB1) is a 92,500-square-foot facility at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in El Paso. Focusing on research in diabetes, infectious diseases and environmental-health issues, the MSB1 will support the growth of a new four-year medical school. The project incorporates departmental office suites for anatomy, biochemistry, microbiology, pharmacology and physiology, principal investigator offices, laboratories, core research facilities and a vivarium.

As the first of several new buildings that will form the core of the new East Campus at TTUHSC El Paso, the MSB1 project set lofty goals. These goals included making the building a visual landmark for the El Paso community and providing a state-of-the-art facility for innovative research in modern medicine, while portraying Texas Tech’s historic Spanish Renaissance architectural style.

With its hand-cut limestone facade and dramatic porticos, the MSB1 sets the standard for the rest of the campus. Other Spanish renaissance elements include deep, recessed windows, a heavy stone base, clay roof tiles, arches, arcades, and the use of natural products such as travertine, limestone and granite.

The MSB1 facility provides outstanding capabilities for an expanding research program and will be the catalyst for enhancing first-rate medical care in the El Paso region.
