Marshall High School

This rural school district needed a facility as a hub for activities for students and the community. Requirements included grade reconfiguration, specialty auditorium design and community involvement throughout the process.
Marshall High School’s design is modeled on Monticello, the Virginia home of Thomas Jefferson. The school is organized into four houses and benefits its 900 students by encouraging collaborative study among the disciplines.
The idea behind the high school’s auditorium was to make members of the community feel like they are having a “night on the town.” The auditorium was designed with a separate entry and an expansive glass lobby, and was positioned to look inviting from the highway. The architect met with representatives from Minnesota’s St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Guthrie Theater to create a facility that attracted quality performers.
The community was very involved in the process: assessing needs, developing ideas and creating the designs. During the construction process, tours were offered to the community to facilitate project understanding.
