DeKalb High School
DeKalb, Illinois
Reinforcing the ties to the community’s rich agricultural heritage, DeKalb Community Unit School District 303 incorporated Prairie-style architectural details, a restored tower clock from the 1902 school, and a graphic design that depicts the community’s culture into the design of its new high school.
Whether individual work, collaborative work, small- or large-group discussion or social activities, the school provides spaces that can be customized easily for students, teachers and community use. Wireless technology and mobile furniture support these space transformations. The ag lab accommodates the inclusion of farm equipment into the teaching space. A shared fireplace provides students with the perfect place for collaboration, group meetings and independent learning.
Not just for kids anymore, schools have become community assets. This high school features a large-group forum room, 800-seat auditorium, black-box theater, fieldhouse with a 200-meter track, competition gym that seats 2,500 and a large cafeteria commons. Careful zoning enables the school to use its athletic, auditorium and gathering spaces independently or in combination, safely and securely.
