In 1928, Calvin Coolidge School was dedicated to the 30th U.S. president. Additions have been made to the original two-story school during the subsequent decades, resulting in a sprawling neighborhood school. With the character of the original building facade well known to the community, the goals of the project were to improve the quality of the educational environment, carry out an energy-conscious and sustainable design, create opportunities to celebrate the original school and decades of adaptation and change, and give homage to the 1928 building vocabulary that evokes this history.
These goals were accomplished through new classroom clusters with integrated technology and amenities, colorful finishes to denote wayfinding and classroom blocks, and repurposed original stone and acoustical pictorial panels framing a “history hall.” Energy conservation and sustainability were achieved through daylight harvesting in classrooms, low-consumption plumbing fixtures, high-efficiency boilers, and drought-tolerant landscaping.
