Belvidere North High School
Belvidere, Illinois
This new high school was designed for an evolving, rural-based community experiencing rapid growth and needing flexibility to support changing education programs.
The building contains four classroom houses, each with teacher work areas, restrooms and student lockers that are situated centrally around a media center and various specialized labs. Flexible learning areas, administration areas and classrooms are carpeted for acoustics, low maintenance and visual warmth.
Bright school colors were used in athletic areas, which include a four-station gymnasium with wood flooring on the main court, a synthetic running track, wrestling room and weight/fitness room.
To encourage community use while maintaining student safety, the facility has various distinct, secure, separate entries for school activities and community use.
Warm paint tones with classic accents and cherry woodwork add softness and warmth throughout the building. Timeless, durable and low-maintenance flooring was used in high-traffic areas. Color accents were used for wayfinding and visual interest throughout the circulation.
Energy performance was a priority in the design through the use of high-quality roof insulation; insulated, high-performance glass windows; and a computer-controlled heating and cooling system.
