Westerville North High School, The SHOP
Westerville, Ohio
The SHOP (SHaping OPportunities) at Westerville North High School is a full-featured maker space inspired heavily by the architects’ work with the Columbus Idea Foundry. Based on that experience, they were able to share best practices, industry-standard equipment, and design elements picked up designing the world’s largest maker space and applied them to a public education setting.
The SHOP is divided into two halves—clean and dirty. The clean side features networked computer workstations for design and coding classes that are connected to a state-of-the-art projection mapping system.
The dirty side features both low- and high-tech manufacturing equipment. Band saws, drill presses, CNC routers, laser cutters, and more are available for students to create everything from artistic sculptures to prototype industrial designs.
The SHOP prepares students for a future of entrepreneurship and workforce success, inspiring students to make new things, both digitally and physically. The experience students gain from learning at The SHOP will prepare them to take advantage of all of the resources emerging from the maker movement.
