Working with longtime design partner C2AE, Cornerstone University selected a former church building on campus for the new home of the school’s popular radio station, WCSG. At the time, this underutilized 1960s-era facility served as a prop house and costume shop for the theater group.
The primary challenge for the design team was answering the question, “How do we transform a building that wasn’t designed to be a radio station such that it can suit a radio station’s acoustic needs?” The finished building also needed to have office space to facilitate fundraising and conduct marketing and sales operations. There had to be at least one studio that WCSG could show off to visitors through laminated glass.
In total, WCSG’s adapted building received two main studios for broadcasting and four supporting studios for production. C2AE integrated noise isolation and reduction throughout material selections, equipment, and layout. The team navigated complex zoning requirements that limited site lighting to create a “lit from within” visual identity for this highly sustainable, professional environment.
