University of Houston, Calhoun Lofts
Houston, Texas
Calhoun Lofts achieved a high-density living-learning environment by being situated in the middle of the campus’ professional precinct—which also adds to the excitement and character of the campus. The residents are offered graduating levels of privacy and comfort, and are integrated into the campus life at varying levels of access and contact. The more private public spaces are on upper levels and the more public amenities spaces on the ground floor. The private courtyard is reserved for residents, but the public courtyard is embellished with a carefully selected art piece. Retail services also are available. Campus traffic is in fact guided through this courtyard.
The project also incorporates updated technical advances such as a ubiquitous Wi-Fi environment and AT&T U-verse integration, and the BACnet Open platform systems monitoring software; both help to place this facility squarely in the 21st century. Other learning opportunities are facilitated in a theater/seminar room, a teaching kitchen, two multipurpose rooms, a computer lab and study spaces throughout the facility.
