To keep up with trends for modern recreation and fitness facilities, the University of Dayton has completed a 129,540-square-foot Fitness and Recreation Complex, nicknamed the “RecPlex.”
The University of Dayton constructed the new complex to revitalize student facilities on a mostly residential campus. According to university president Daniel J. Curran, the RecPlex “… will allow us to provide students with a superior learning and living environment and to compete for top students.”
The facility will help promote already popular student intramural sports, as well as provide ample space for students` recreation and fitness needs. As the student government association resolution said, “It will add to the ‘power of the student experience’ at the University of Dayton.”
Nearly twice the size of the old recreational facility, the University of Dayton RecPlex is part of the university’s plan to improve and modernize student facilities on a historic campus. With help from a series of student, faculty and staff planning workshops, the architect, along with Edge and Tinney Architects, helped draw up the plan for the new facility. It includes classrooms for health and sports science classes; four courts for basketball and volleyball; a sand volleyball court; three glass-backed racquetball courts; two multi-
activity courts for floor hockey, inline hockey, soccer, lacrosse, tennis, aerobics, a rope course and other activities; a climbing wall; eight-lane natatorium; whirlpool; an elevated indoor track; aerobics and cardiovascular rooms that include 180 pieces of equipment; locker rooms; and a lounge and juice bar.
“It’s a growing trend on college campuses to build new fitness and recreation complexes for students and staff,” says Dennis Lammert, project manager. “RecPlex will promote health and fitness throughout the various venues in the building, be a great addition to the UD campus and aid in the recruitment and retention of students.”
