The Westminster Schools was founded in 1951 and moved in 1953 to its 180-acre campus in Atlanta’s Buckhead neighborhood. Between 1953 and 2000, the campus was established and enlarged with over a dozen buildings that support a progressive K-12 coeducational curriculum. With no new facilities constructed since 2000, the trustees commissioned a master plan in 2015 to define a strategy to renew the campus, expand facilities, and reposition the school to respond to educational trends and an evolved curriculum. The creation of a football stadium and a community engagement plaza was one of the first priorities.
The Westminster Schools has been an athletic powerhouse in its high school division for decades. The facilities required substantial upgrades to match the school’s stature. A new stadium was designed to provide a better spectator experience, new home and visitor locker rooms, a “half-time house,” a press box, coach’s boxes, a VIP box, and a broadcast facility.
Many K-12 stadia are conceived as “destination” venues—places used and occupied sporadically—but this facility was conceived to be always charged with life. Situated adjacent to the stadium, and spatially intertwined, is a new “community plaza,” a place where students, faculty, parents, and staff are encouraged to congregate, and where major social and community events can be staged. The proximity of the stadium and the plaza to the Campbell/Hawkins facility ensures that this area of the campus will always be a destination for those who seek community.
