The Samuel Randall School, also known as PS 138X, is a primary school in a dense but low-scale Castle Hill neighborhood of the Bronx. The goal for this project is to provide a new three-story addition to increase capacity at the existing school by 522 seats. The addition will provide a new entrance to the facility, a cafeteria and kitchen, and a new administrative suite. It will increase the school space by 23 instructional classrooms, including music, art, and special education classrooms. Outdoor play areas will include a new athletic track, games, and outside seating areas.

As one of the early projects to employ the NYC Green School Guidelines 2019, the design applied the principles of Passive House Design to achieve an extremely tight thermal envelope to exceed the mandated 20% reduction in energy cost. The objective was to provide the most cost-effective approach to build and operate, all without impeding operation of the existing school and play yards.
