Saint Louis University, Grand Residence and Dining Hall
St. Louis, Missouri
Grand Hall is a unique multipurpose building that combines residential, academics, socialization, dining and three Living and Learning Communities: Diversity and Global Citizenship, Engineering and Innovation, and Ethical Leaders in Business. Each learning community has a dedicated residential floor, specialized “learning commons” and multipurpose classrooms. At night, students use these classrooms for social gatherings and group projects. A business incubator, maker space, lounges on each floor and a community kitchen further support a variety of ways to learn and collaborate.
“SLU blue” is used prominently throughout the interior, with pops of coordinating orange, yellow and green to reflect the liveliness of the students. The SLU logo was incorporated into custom furniture, window glass, technology cabinets and masonry. The Dining Hall features a mural of the “History of the Billiken,” the school’s mascot. Lounges, study rooms, classrooms and conference rooms all offer comfortable mobile furniture so rooms can be reconfigured depending on student needs.
The extensive use of glass lets plenty of natural light permeate classrooms and lounges with views to downtown St. Louis. The seven-story glass façade, emblazoned with the SLU logo, creates a strong visual presence in the neighborhood.
