When the Lansing School District decided to convert this former preK-3 school building into Pattengill Biotechnical Magnet School, the project team needed to provide enough space for grades preK to 6. After the renovation, new and existing classrooms had to be tech-focused. In response, the project tripled the building’s capacity. Flexible, technology-rich project labs were designed to optimize hands-on learning and student engagement through group learning activities.

While incorporating an addition to the building, several areas of poor workmanship were discovered within the existing construction. Coordination with the construction manager enabled the team to keep the project within budget and on schedule.

Complex engineering at the main entrance demonstrates the project team’s technical skill. The canopy overhead was designed to move independently from the building because the existing structure did not have the capacity to support it. Large footings with double columns carry steel beams cantilevering to support the 11,000-pound steel girder. The intricate canopy framing is hidden beneath well-designed architecture for a refined finished product.
