Oakton Skokie Campus Library Learning Commons

Based on a design concept of introspection and the metaphor of a tree, the design for the Oakton Skokie Campus Library Learning Commons provides a contemporary take on the evolving delivery of college information services. The reception area provides the “roots,” introducing visitors to the “trunk” of the primary central circulation (including an elevator). Secondary paths connect the “branches,” and individual offices, classrooms, and huddle spaces provide the “leaves.”

The Learning Commons is conceived as a hub of academic activity for the entire Oakton community. The facility integrates academic support services including the Access and Disability Resource Center (ADRC), Learning Center, Library, Testing Services, and TRIO Student Support within a physical environment designed to enhance collaboration. Spread over two floors, the library stacks, reference and tutoring spaces are placed in a central, open environment. More private spaces, including a testing area, classrooms, offices, huddle areas, media room, and a lounge are arrayed around the perimeter of each level. Connection between levels is by a dedicated elevator within the Commons.
