Oakton Des Plaines Campus Library Learning Commons
Des Plaines, Illinois
The renovation of Oakton Community College’s Des Plaines Campus Library Learning Commons reimagines the two-level interior based on the “living room effect” with a focus on comfort, functionality, and flow. The new spaces support and encourage diverse learning styles and serve as a home away from home for students.
The Learning Commons is conceived as a hub of academic activity for the entire Oakton community. The facility integrates academic support services including the campus IT Help Desk, Learning Center, Library, and TRIO Student Support within a physical environment designed to enhance collaboration. Open space fosters shared group learning, and dedicated private areas support focused individual work. Comfortable new couches, armchairs, and a fireplace welcome more casual study and gatherings. Abundant natural light and wood ceiling baffles provide a welcoming and nurturing environment. A lively palette of interior finishes renders simple materials—carpet, ceiling tile, and paint—as vital elements.
This is the architect’s second library project with Oakton and builds on the collaborative methodologies initially developed for the Skokie Campus Library Learning Commons.
