Missouri Innovation Campus
Lee's Summit, Missouri
Touted as the most accelerated K-16 program in the nation, the Missouri Innovation Campus (MIC) advances competencies-based learning and challenges many outdated conventions about learning environments. The MIC program is a unique partnership among Lee’s Summit School District, Metropolitan Community College, and the University of Central Missouri.
By engaging business partners and community organizations, the program shortens the time to degree completion, significantly reduces college debt, and provides job-ready skills highly sought by employers. It also instills entrepreneurial mindsets to help students engage in the Gig Economy.
The design of the MIC facility is intended to instill and reinforce skill sets that business partners have identified as lacking—hard skills as well as soft skills. Business partners say students need to enter the workforce prepared for the speed of business, with an ability to collaborate within teams and across departments. They need to develop multidisciplinary mindsets, embody strong communications proficiencies, and display emerging confidence in the leadership of teams. The openness of the learning environments supports the self-directed learning model, and helps shape many of these soft skills.
