Millikin University, University Commons Addition and Renovation
Decatur, Illinois
University Commons serves as the new front door to campus, re-energizing Millikin University’s learning spaces. The facility uniquely combines library and student center functions into a central location and encourages collaboration.
The Commons seamlessly blends the renovated Staley Library with a large addition. Designers kept the central atrium that connected all four stories, but simplified the stair circulation. Elements of the library were incorporated into a more efficient, forward-thinking design. High-density shelving stores the library’s condensed collection, reducing its footprint and freeing up space for collaboration studios, a new technologies lab and increased research space. The Commons also houses many research and innovation programs, including the Media Arts Center, WJMU Radio Station, Writing Center, Center for Leadership Education, as well as student dining and an event space.
Glass walls used throughout the interior create visual connectedness with minimal sound transmission. Students in the library can view the bustling activity, but the noise will not disrupt their concentration. Think Tank and collaboration spaces are highly visible, glass-enclosed and feature writable wall paint to encourage interactions and ideas. The spirit of academic collaboration and engagement is palpable.
