Michigan State University, Presidential Suite Interior Renovation
East Lansing, Michigan
In contrast to its 1960s-era former design, renovations at Michigan State University’s Presidential Suite aimed to introduce a sense of transparency balanced with security. Prior to the 2018 interior renovation, dark wood prevented the passage of natural light between rooms. Corridors felt enclosed and uninviting. Among the most drastic improvements was the addition of frosted glass, which brightened the space considerably. The wood that remained was replaced with a lighter species, including some pieces of furniture—such as the front desk—that were constructed of reclaimed wood from fallen trees on campus.
The suite’s textural inspiration draws on the image of MSU’s intricate web of pathways as seen from an aerial view of campus. Angular patterns in the carpet and furniture enliven the suite as they pop through translucent office walls to welcome visitors inside.
This fast-track project needed to be completed in time for the arrival of MSU’s newly appointed president. Design was initiated in October, and construction began just two months later. The suite was open for staff use by April 2019.
