McDaniel College, Leroy Merritt Fitness Center and Klitzberg Pavilion
Westminster, Maryland
To maximize the impact of a modest space and budget, the center was designed as a veneer that wraps around the south end of the existing gymnasium, in a prominent location on campus. A dramatic glass curtainwall and staircase create a theme of transparency that draws people inside to enjoy the activity, sweeping views and abundant daylighting.
Between workouts in the fitness center, students gather in the pavilion to watch televised sporting events, visit the multimedia McDaniel sports hall of fame and archive displays, and hang out in the cafe. This common area shapes the experience of the building and serves social, display and event surge-space needs. The community atmosphere extends outside with a new pedestrian plaza.
Architecturally, the building pairs the glass facade with substantial piers of Indiana limestone, an iconic material used throughout the neo-Georgian campus. The piers emphasize building entrances and vertical circulation, and provide space for interior display niches. The combination of materials makes the facility a dramatic destination that still fits comfortably in its environment.
