McDaniel College, Gill Center Renovation & New Kinesiology Department
Westminster, Maryland
The Kinesiology Department has grown to be McDaniel College’s largest and fastest-growing major. Sharing classroom and office spaces within the athletics facilities of the Gill Physical Education Learning Center, the department desperately needed larger facilities. Without expanding the footprint of the building, Marshall Craft Associates was able to find new space within the building to house state-of-the-art facilities.
Through excavation and underpinning of the original 1930s gymnasium building, an additional 9,000 square feet of space was created to house faculty offices, three laboratories, and a seminar room. By enclosing an underused seating mezzanine, three large classrooms were developed with operable glass walls that overlook the existing competition athletic courts. Through careful planning, significant acoustic separations have been provided between the gymnasiums and the new spaces, providing greater flexibility of use than was available previously.
Finish upgrades to both gymnasiums complete the update of the Gill Center complex. The highly collaborative relationship between Marshall Craft Associates and the construction management team enabled the project to be completed ahead of schedule and under budget.
