Mayfield Middle School, Extended Learning Area
Mayfield Heights, Ohio
To support the district’s mission to provide “All Access Learning” for its students, Mayfield City Schools transformed an outdated, underused gymnasium as part of a multiphase renovation of a 1924 middle school building. The result is a flexible learning space that supports not only small and large group instruction, but also collaborative and independent learning.
Highlights of the renovated space include the creation of a mezzanine level, multiple small group rooms, 3D printing and laser/vinyl cutting labs, virtual reality studios, video recording and editing rooms, a presentation stage, and large collaborative and lounge areas. The space received fresh, bright colors and patterns as well as a new eastern exposure window wall to complement the existing skylight.
Flexible furniture, collaborative technology, optimal daylighting, and writable surfaces throughout make the space both inviting and functional. The space has been a huge success with students and teachers alike, providing an environment to meet the needs of each student’s learning style.
