Madison Area Technical College, Madison College Gateway, Student Achievement Center
Madison, Wisconsin
Celebrating a century of teaching excellence, Madison College invited PRA to set the stage for campus design for the next 100 years. With a sweeping arc of glass and stone, the dynamic new gateway boldly announces a reinvented Madison College. Featuring a welcome center, gallery and café, student achievement center and campus library, the 93,000-square-foot addition is the hub of campus life, where students meet, socialize, study and learn.
This new campus "front door" boasts a three-story daylit atrium that exudes a welcoming presence. Here students are greeted by a 50-foot simulated waterfall, where ribbons of lit glass cascade a limestone face. Viewed from each level of the atrium, the waterfall prominently anchors the gateway to "Main Street," an internal pedestrian thoroughfare connecting the campus.
From Main Street’s west end, an open grand stair reaches the atrium’s second floor student achievement center, café, and third floor campus library. Along the atrium’s curved glassy exterior wall, student lounges overlook a leafy outdoor gathering space, shaped with locally quarried stone boulders and native grasses.
