Before this renovation was implemented, Lannon Elementary School was a 30,000-square-foot building originally constructed in 1939. The existing two-section school was converted into three sections housing kindergarten through 5th grade.
In order to improve communication and allow for more group instruction, a cluster concept with breakout computer areas was developed and implemented with a 25,000-square-foot addition. Each grade cluster was provided with a technology alcove,and the kindergarten suite designed around a courtyard for easy access to outdoor activities.
Due to the increasing number of students, a new two-section gym with built-in cafeteria tables was constructed. The undersized existing gym was converted to an instructional media center, the ceiling opened up and skylights added to create a more naturally lit setting. A new entrance lobby allows the community access to the gym, large-group instruction areas and IMC for use after school hours while keeping the remainder of the building closed off. In order to retain continuity between the old and new sections, a similar stone finish was used.
