Lance Thompson Elementary School
Argyle, Texas
More than 200 students, educators and district leaders were asked to envision a “school of the future” for elementary-aged students in the Northwest Independent School District. The result is a school with no boundaries, where learning is on display and where students and educators collaborate formally and organically as part of a unique culture. This facility became the district’s prototype.
At the heart of the two-story school, a high-volume library/commons uses an exciting treehouse concept—supported by laminated wood columns. It was key that the library be open, while also minimizing distractions. To meet this challenge, the team designed a variety of spaces with mobile, flexible elements (such as movable walls). Small and large learning spaces—plus a maker space with connection to the outdoors—surround the library/commons, enabling teachers to scale learning environments.
Grade-level learning communities connect directly to the library/commons. Throughout the building are multiple channels of connectivity between peers, teachers, administrators and the community. Transparency creates visual connection between spaces. Biophilic design elements create a unique learning experience.
