KIPP Academy Lynn Collegiate
Lynn, Massachusetts
KIPP Academy Lynn Collegiate has a new home for its growing academic program. A 100-year-old former warehouse building has been converted into a modern high school for grades 9 to 12.
The commons/hangout space is an informal area that creates community among students from different neighborhoods. It is perfect for independent, introspective work. Flexible furnishings and writeable walls open it to group work as well.
The existing building’s square floor plate created an exciting design challenge. Because the traditional layout of classrooms on either side of a double-loaded corridor would not be possible, converting the four-story building into a 21st-century learning environment required an innovative design. The team was ultimately able to use the square layout to the school’s advantage when programming the space. Each floor now includes breakout spaces for adjacent classrooms and separate seminar spaces for larger groups.
A centrally situated open stair connects all four floors. Shared spaces include a gallery on Level 1, supporting the adjacent arts, music, theater, and dance classrooms; an open library on Level 2; student hub on Level 3; and a large seminar room on Level 4. Using KIPP’s bold color palette and visual identity elements, Arrowstreet developed floor-to-ceiling wall graphics with messaging that reinforces each level’s programming.
