The Joe Lee Johnson STEAM Academy is the seventh elementary campus that has been built in the evolution of a prototype design. The facility opened as the Round Rock Independent School District’s first STEAM Academy.
The school has been designed for project-based learning in a learner-centered and future-ready school environment.
Academic neighborhoods have paired classrooms that surround open commons areas and enable a variety of teaching and learning modalities.
Flexible furniture, transparent and folding glass walls, and a technology-rich learning environment foster collaboration. Floor patterns and paint colors were selected to enhance wayfinding.
At the start of construction, the academy’s principal requested a change to folding glass doors in lieu of swing doors between classrooms and commons.
The structural system was able to support this change in opening size and type, and the upgrade was accomplished without too much trigger work.
