Indian Lake Middle School

Faced with a rapidly deteriorating sixth-, seventh- and eighth- grade facility, and overcrowding in the three K-5 elementary schools, the district constructed a new middle school to accommodate the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grades.
The plan is organized into academic communities connected to the central building. Each academic community consists of 10 teaching pods of two classrooms and shared project room, including a science lab/classroom teaching pod. The design concept provides flexibility for the future to incorporate computer/telecommunications/telemedia systems throughout each classroom. At the intersection of the academic community wings, the media center and computer lab are the focus and serve as the technology center of the school.
Interior spaces are zoned to separate functions from the academic areas, allowing evening and weekend usage without compromising building security. In addition, the gym floor is sunken and a folding partition between the commons and gymnasium allows the commons to become a stage for student productions and assemblies, with seating provided in the gym.
The main entries contain skylights to invite students and visitors into the building.
