Florida State University, Strozier Library 2nd Floor Renovation
Tallahassee, Florida
Strozier Library was built in the 1950s and serves as Florida State University’s largest academic library. With only intermittent updates over the years, the last significant improvement to the second floor was a partial renovation in 1994. This contributed to an inconsistent open floor plan, especially in areas where original asbestos flooring remained.
The main objective was to improve the student experience at Strozier Library by increasing the number of seats, improving wayfinding, reducing floor surface noise and increasing available power outlets. By removing book collections from this floor, the university was able to increase seating capacity and maximize distance between seating, creating more student space. Wall graphics, carpet pattern, and accent paint colors have been added to assist in wayfinding. The carpet finish also contributed to reduced noise on the floor and increased maintainability. New electrical outlets were provided at existing columns & floor poke-through devices to increase flexibility and accessibility for students.
