Glacier Edge Elementary School
Verona, Wisconsin
The major challenge in constructing this elementary school was to balance the broader requirements of an affordable, durable and functional building while creating an inspirational and meaningful school experience for students.
The design concept was based loosely on the theory of artist Piet Mondrian. His art was based on absolute harmony of straight lines and pure colors. It is this spirit that guided the design solution.
To create Mondrian’s utopian environment, straight lines were incorporated in various thicknesses, materials and planes. Color blocks were placed intentionally onto the walls, floor and ceiling for wayfinding, interest and design. Color relationships were explored. Flat and angled dimensional planes were designed creatively into the walls, ceilings and lighting. The school’s linear elements are juxtaposed with strategically placed circular shapes to create balance and harmony in the environment.
The project also included a sustainability aspect with the addition of a ground-source geothermal mechanical system. The anticipated payback for the school is 18 years, and there also will be cost savings for the heating and cooling.
White accented by black and gray lines was infused with warmth and color by adding red, blue and orange.
Nonconforming applications of basic lighting, paint and shape combinations created a meaningful and inspirational space for children.
