Farmingdale State University, Orchard Hall

Orchard Hall is the first new residential building on the Farmingdale campus in nearly three decades. It breaks away from traditional residence hall design by providing a variety of apartment-style layouts. The 408-bed residence offers varied configurations of bedrooms, kitchens, eating areas and common spaces.
The four-story building is composed of two wings, named Nassau and Suffolk in recognition of the two counties that share the campus. These two wings meet at a central node, which includes a resident director apartment, laundry, full kitchen and a common lounge on each floor. At the first floor, this node houses the single entrance, security desk, lobby and mailboxes. On the site, Orchard Hall’s two wings capture an outdoor “room” for student events.
The vibrant color and texture of the stucco exterior provide an iconic image at a prominent corner of the campus. The building is constructed of load-bearing, autoclaved, aerated concrete, a highly energy-efficient masonry that helps the building meet New York state’s sustainable-design requirements.
