Drexel University, Paul Peck Problem Solving and Research Building
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Students, faculty, and staff at Drexel University are witnessing major growth on campus. Several new buildings are under construction, and existing facilities are being renovated. These improvements have provided the university with an opportunity to relocate classrooms and complementary student service spaces to create a synergy that better serves student needs.
One such opportunity existed on the second floor of the Paul Peck Problem Solving and Research Building, where the layout and mechanical systems were improved to house seven general classrooms, the Study Abroad office, the St. Katherine Drexel Chapel, and Newman Director’s office.
In the newly renovated 12,000-square-foot space, a study lounge was created at the main elevator lobby. It has a feature wall with accent material, specialty lighting, and a floating ceiling to create a welcoming atmosphere.
To avoid the monotony of a long linear corridor, the classroom hallways feature accent points such as a recessed seating nook, changes in the ceiling plane, or cove lighting. The classrooms have flexible furniture and are equipped with audio visual equipment.
The Study Abroad offices have sliding doors and are designed with workstations for collaboration and include a conference room.
The St. Katharine Drexel Chapel has an assembly space for Catholic prayer and features four framed stained glass windows with LED backlighting.
