Doherty Memorial High School

For the new 1,670-student, comprehensive Doherty Memorial High School, the district sought a collegiate feeling; it wanted the space to feel expansive and inspiring, particularly the main lobby and other common areas.

As the largest high school in New England’s second largest city, the building serves as a much-used community resource beyond the regular school day. With that in mind, designers clustered community-use spaces off the main lobby, across two floors.

Immediately upon entering the school, the large cafeteria features access to outdoor dining and a sculptural community stair connecting the main level to the second level, where the media center, physical education suite and upper level of the 800-seat auditorium can be accessed. Large windows into the media center create an open and inviting environment, within and at the entrance to that space.

The academic wings of the tiered five-story building have common rooms adjacent to classroom hallways, placed to take advantage of daylight and equipped with movable furniture and interactive whiteboards with projectors for collaborative or small group learning.
