With contemplation and prayer at the center of the Jesuit tradition, the College of the Holy Cross needed a space for its popular retreat programs. The Contemplative Center includes:
• A chapel
• Single and shared bedrooms
• Meeting and breakout spaces
• A reception area
• A kitchen and dining area
• Office space for staff
• Outdoor spaces to enjoy the 50-acre property
Services and reflections are held in the chapel, which features expansive east- and north-facing windows and seating for 70. Small hanging light fixtures simulate a spiral galaxy connecting the space to the story of St. Ignatius, who was known to have prayed as he looked at the sky.
Interior furnishings and finishes are spare and understated, yet comfortable and inviting. Simply appointed bedrooms have soft colors that turn occupants’ focus either inward or to the exterior views. The choice of materials is intended to mirror the landscape: primarily wood, stone, and glass. This facilitates the integration of indoor and outdoor spaces; every room and hallway takes advantage of vistas of the nearby reservoir.
