Design Team: Kate Fijalkowska, AIA (Project Manager); Douglas Breaux, AIA (Principal-in-Charge); Charles Black Construction Co. (Construction Manager)
In fall 2016, Buford, Ga., a quaint suburb of Atlanta, unveiled the new Buford High School Arena, a multipurpose facility designed to accommodate large-scale athletic, academic and community events. The arena was conceptualized by the Buford City School District and designed by Breaux & Associates Architects. Built to accommodate the school system’s growing student body and the thriving community at large, the new arena epitomizes Buford’s spirit and core values with advanced, modern features and eye-catching aesthetics.
The nationally ranked Buford Wolves are a renowned force in arts, academics and athletics, and have received many awards and state titles. This new multipurpose facility has the ability to accommodate more than 5,000 spectators for events ranging from basketball tournaments and cheerleading competitions to graduations, proms and concerts. The arena boasts energy-efficient lighting and mechanical systems and top-of-the-line amenities such as pro basketball goals, portable sports flooring, and a four-sided video scoreboard over mid-court.
“We are especially pleased with the truly multipurpose functionality of this new arena,” says Interim Superintendent Joy Davis. “With its architectural design and state-of-the-art features, the Buford Arena now rivals many collegiate-level facilities.”
Passing by the arena’s striking façade, visitors are welcomed into a lobby plaza, complete with custom terrazzo floors highlighting the Buford School emblem, and open views to the upper and extending lower levels. Beyond the lobby, the sprawling facility features a mezzanine surrounding the arena, giving spectators a 360-degree perspective of the structure. The arena also has concessions stands, locker rooms, weight rooms, training and study areas, as well as a lounge for faculty, coaches and the support staff.
