Educating 2,800 high school students in aging facilities, Elmbrook School District undertook an ambitious plan to remain the premier education choice for area residents.

Budget constraints ruled out a new facility. The architectural response achieves the district’s vision of new state-of-the-art schools within the cores and shells of existing 1950s- and 1960s-era buildings. The renovation of Brookfield Central and East High Schools includes the repurposing of outdated gymnasiums for expanded fine-arts programs; technologically updated and enlarged classrooms and labs; new gathering and prefunction spaces; and construction of new fieldhouses with event lobbies serving all sporting and assembly events.

In addition to the new 100,000 square feet of Type IIIB exterior load-bearing masonry construction, the project also includes new exterior cladding; replacing every window and door with energy-efficient glazing and entry systems; and installing new central boiler and chiller plants featuring ice-storage systems.

The $62 million project unifies two campuses in modern expressions with a sense of place befitting their traditions of education excellence.
