The College of Health Sciences (COHS) is the second of a four-school quadrangle that will serve as the nucleus of a 200-plus-acre medical research, clinic, support facilities, student housing and mixed-use development at Chaffee Crossing, Fort Smith, Arkansas. The COHS will support two doctorate degrees: Physical and Occupational Therapy. It also will provide space for a future Physician’s Assistant program.
The building exterior continues the existing College of Osteopathic Medicine goals of historical elegance. It uses similar materials and features, but stands on its own in massing and exterior texture.
The three-story steel, painted brick and cut limestone structure provides instructional labs, a free clinic, student commons, study areas and staff offices. The PT and OT students share some lab and classroom spaces to facilitate a higher degree of utilization.
The spatial organization was guided by the requirements of the instructional programs and the goal of creating teaching and study spaces to be as flexible as possible regarding curriculum and class size. Study and circulation spaces, “eddies,” alcoves, and commons are sprinkled throughout the building to encourage learning and interaction among students and staff.
