Annie Purl Elementary School
Georgetown, Texas
The classrooms and learning environment in the Georgetown district’s new Annie Purl Elementary School are inventive, engaging and agile. They respond to the district’s desire to support learners who are creative, collaborative, think critically and seek self-knowledge. A rigorous planning process brought together curriculum, professional development and design disciplines to respond to these values; the result is a customized and exciting school.
Inside, learning communities are split into grade levels. Each community features classrooms, flex space and a teacher design lab, all connected to outdoor courtyards. Teachers and students are empowered to design their own learning experiences. This effort is supported with transparency between spaces; this allows for passive supervision and greater freedom for students to spill into common areas.
Within classrooms, flexible furniture, technology and mobile storage elevate responsiveness to curriculum needs. Classrooms are connected with movable walls, which also are writable. This enhances collaboration among teachers and peers.
Learning communities enfold the library and maker space. This greatly expands the available instructional space, creating a connected and shared hub for hands-on learning.
