AMP Lab @ WMU
Grand Rapids, Michigan
The Advanced Manufacturing Partnership (AMP) Lab @ WMU occupies the first two stories of Western Michigan University’s downtown Grand Rapids location. The lab is a collaboration between regional manufacturers, WMU, and Grand Rapids Community College. It was created to address a regional shortage of skilled trades and engineering professionals.
The AMP Lab’s design celebrates the building’s historic nature with exposed brick and original wood columns. Visibility into the building, and throughout it, was a key design driver. Wherever possible, glass curtain walls or glass partitions were used. This enables students and visitors to see the innovation and learning taking place throughout the space. The flexible classroom area and furniture give instructors and students options and help make the space functional for a variety of disciplines.
Learning is embedded throughout the space with design thinking areas, maker spaces, robotics, and small batch production facilities. The facility features 3D printers and scanners, a CAD/CAM lab, plasma cutter, laser cutter, welding station, metrology equipment, and prototyping tools.
