Youngker High School, Performing Arts Center
Buckeye, Arizona
Threatened by the ubiquitous expansion of suburbia, Buckeye, Ariz., remains proud of its agricultural heritage and deep-rooted community. The design of the campus at Youngker High School sought to capture, reinterpret and represent this unique sense of place, and the Performing Arts Center is the culmination of that effort.
Inspired by the surrounding built environment of this heritage, the Performing Arts Center utilizes a series of pre-engineered metal buildings to house a distraction-free performance space that enables the audience to lose themselves in the production. The journey into this performance is orchestrated by a series of preceding spaces that anticipate the forthcoming drama, such as the soaring three-story lobby, and gradually isolate the audience from the world outside and into the quiet and attenuated space of the seating chamber.
The creative use of simple materials and efficient construction methods enabled the interior finishes and theatrical systems to be upgraded, providing the owner with a state-of-the-art facility for use by the entire community.
