Xavier University, The Gallagher Student Center
Cincinnati, Ohio
Gallagher Student Center is at the crossroads of Xavier University between the residential and academic malls that comprise the campus.
The new student center was needed to replace an outdated “union” in the same location. It mixes indoor and outdoor space, creating a sense of openness, connectedness and intimacy.
The clock tower marking the student entrance is a landmark to serve as the visual focus and hinge between the two malls. The center is at the top of a sloping site and welcomes the community.
Stylistically, the new center endeavors to fuse Collegiate Gothic craftsmanship and proportion with the more contemporary 1950s and 1960s architectural expression of neighboring buildings. Crisp detailing is achieved with buff cast stone and modular brick. Large gray tinted glazed openings are articulated with light aluminum window framing.
The center is organized into three overlapping components. The office component serves administrative staff, student organizations and the bookstore. The social component includes lounges, retail, entertainment and food service. The performing-arts component contains a scene shop, rehearsal space and a 350-seat theater. All are organized around a four-story atrium, referred to as the campus’ “living room.”
