Xavier University, Alter Hall Transformation
Cincinnati, Ohio
The central challenge of this project was to create 21st-century learning environments within the confines of what had become an obsolete building. Alter Hall remains Xavier’s primary academic building while creating an open, transparent and welcoming environment that expands its use beyond the classroom. Flexible walls, abundant interior glass, and movable furniture support informal teaching and learning opportunities.
Critical to this success are environments that provide collaborative student-centered spaces. Recognizing that significant learning takes place outside the classroom, the design incorporates a variety of ways that students use informal spaces. The result is a portfolio of spaces that encourage students and faculty to remain engaged with the building and one another. Flexible furnishings and writable surfaces are included in various locations to facilitate spontaneous learning. Project work rooms provide spaces for individuals or small groups.
Student-centered spaces provide a range of opportunities for interacting with the building — from impromptu seating between classes to getting “nestled in” with comfortable furnishings near writable wall surfaces.
