Wright State University, Rinzler Student Sports Complex
Fairborn, Ohio
The project goal was to create an athletic and recreational sports complex for all students. The building sits at an underdeveloped campus entry. A prominent campus gateway is created by the sign tower, making this campus entry visible from both the access road and the elevated interstate beyond.
The ramped roof surface supports a variety of informal activities, from lounging on the turf green roof to running wind sprints up the concrete plaza. During soccer matches, fans can watch from the roof plaza, which creates an energetic atmosphere and activates the public space below.
Restrooms, concessions and locker rooms are tucked below the occupied roof and accessed from the soccer field side of the building.
The south wall and roof deck are made of cast-in-place concrete, referencing the nearby highway infrastructure. The wood and steel sign tower and shelters stand lightly in opposition to the massiveness of the concrete.
The ramped roof surface is a physical expression of Wright State University’s commitment to accessibility. The sloped concrete walls also make a symbolic geometric connection to the existing main campus entry’s sloping brick wall.
“Very innovative and sensitively integrated approach to function and entry into campus.”–2013 jury
