The adaptive reuse of Winston-Salem State University’s Hill Hall converted a 1964 science classroom building into a vibrant academic Student Success Center. Left vacant from 2005 to 2012 and adjacent to some of the oldest buildings on campus, Hill Hall consisted of a three-story classroom wing, a lecture hall, and a one-story lobby situated at a split level between the first and second floors.
The primary goal of the conversion was to establish a “one stop shop” for academic support services. To make this possible, the building needed to be completely reimagined. The project stripped the existing 31,873-square-foot building down to the concrete structure, floor systems, and roof systems, and provided a 6,148-square-foot addition. The building was envisioned as a magnet to attract students by displaying technology throughout, providing exhibits of art and culture, providing daylighting, and establishing open, expansive spaces to inspire collaboration. The open tutoring spaces provide flexibility for varying methods of teaching and learning to accommodate technology and student culture changes over the years.
