Winona Area Middle School

Planning for this school included administrators, teachers, staff and community stakeholders.
They wanted a compact plan providing short “travel time” and easy supervision; clearly zoned community spaces for extended-hour use without sacrificing student movement and connectedness; and eight house-type clusters of five classrooms, staff home bases and conference resource spaces to encourage communication in smaller settings.
The core of the design, the community commons and media center, is connected directly to all components. Specialty spaces for art, science, music, family/consumer science and manufacturing enhance hands-on learning. Winona’s strong community commitment led to construction of a six-lane, 25-yard swimming pool, two dividable gymnasiums and an arts/performance wing with a 650-seat auditorium.
Durable materials—brick, stone, concrete block, glazed block, terrazzo, carpet, ceramic tile, acoustical tile and locally crafted specialty lighting fixtures—provide unique characteristics. Cast stone vignettes from Winona’s history, a map of the Mississippi River set into the terrazzo cafeteria floor, and incorporation of a river wildlife diorama add ambience.
