Windward Community College, Library Learning Commons
Kane'ohe, Hawaii
As an academic center, the Windward Community College Library Learning Commons serves as a focal point. To complement the campus aesthetic, the design of the modern center incorporates the theme of traditional Spanish Mission Revival architecture, with decorative copper motifs and a red-tiled roof. The master planning of the library also placed the structure in between existing native trees to preserve the surrounding site.
The library features elements beyond a regular library, including a media center, computer lab, classrooms and a coffee shop. All three levels of the library are organized by function; the lower level is a more public and active zone, and the upper level is a private study zone. As a flexible study environment, the library promotes both collaborative and individual learning styles. Open common areas, including the three-story atrium and skylights, bring in daylight to create a more efficient learning environment.
As the first green library in Hawaii, the center features several sustainable elements, including eco-friendly cabinetry and photovoltaic panels.
