William F. Stanley Elementary School

This facility was conceived as a “green school” to provide students and the community with a living model of energy-efficient practices. Crucial to the project’s success were the coordination between design and consultant teams during the schematic design phase and the incorporation of the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED rating system.
The organization of the building along an east-west axis maximizes daylighting and permits sunlight into 90 percent of the interior spaces. Helping to regulate solar gain for optimum energy-efficiency are light shelves, sunshade louvers, lighting-level sensors tied to dimming ballasts and the use of low-e glass. Additional green elements include operable windows in all classrooms and teaching spaces; centrally ducted air with fan-coil units; high-efficiency mechanical systems; photovoltaic panels; a wind turbine; and a manufactured wetland that treats site stormwater while recharging the water table. Students are able to monitor energy use via a renewable energy teaching and monitoring station situated in the media center.
