The design intent for the new William F. Cooke Jr. Elementary School was to create a vibrant community school that would inspire students and community alike. The design resulted from a collaborative effort among architects, administrators, teachers, and students.
Student artwork is incorporated into multiple design elements. The bi-directional main entry is highlighted by its “Bus Tank” aquarium and Lego wall. Directly adjacent is the main stairwell, housed in a glazed volume accented with a colorful mobile, which creates a sense of excitement upon arrival.
The K-1 wing is separated from a two-story academic wing that houses grades 2-3 on the lower level and grades 4-5 on the second floor. Bright colors assigned to each classroom wing assist with wayfinding and create a sense of place.
The school facility was developed to be highly energy-efficient. It incorporates daylight, LED lighting throughout, and a variable refrigerant flow mechanical system, as well as a palette of environmentally friendly and sturdy materials.
